Sensitive Intelligence Unit (SIU)

The Sensitive Intelligence Unit (SIU) supports both the operational arm of the ROCU and force intelligence units and teams. The team is part of the national Sensitive Intelligence Network, which defines and standardises how sensitive intelligence is managed in law enforcement.

Our services

The SIU can:

  • offer intelligence and tactical advice to teams tackling Serious and Organised Crime (SOC)
  • access and manage intelligence and support from:
    • other ROCUs for intelligence and SOC teams
    • other forces, where intelligence is not directly available
    • other areas of law enforcement such as UK Border Force (UKBF), HMRC and the National Crime Agency (NCA)
  • help force intelligence teams share sensitive intelligence with law enforcement agencies while protecting the source as that team
  • undertake discreet enquiries on behalf of force intelligence teams
  • analyse communications data and evaluate new techniques and technologies
  • provide support with intelligence development
  • handle intelligence material classified as Secret and Top Secret on behalf of forces
  • assist in the handling of intelligence material gathered by teams in the ROCU, such as the Technical Surveillance Unit (TSU) or the Regional Undercover Unit (RUU)
  • provide live intelligence support to the ROCU’s Operations Teams

Many of these services are available on a 24/7 – 365 days a year basis when required.

Who can use our services?

  • All SOC teams
  • All intelligence teams
  • All Counter Corruption Units
  • Other teams by request through the Gateway in the Regional Intelligence Hub

We are keen to offer initial advice on how our capabilities and other partners may be able to assist your investigation. Bids for capabilities then need to be taken to your Force Tasking meeting.

How to request services

Our Gateway, within the Regional Intelligence Unit, can provide more information about this service:

The Regional Intelligence Unit is available:

  • Monday to Friday 08:00 – 22:00
  • Weekends 08:00 – 16:30

For complex or resource-intensive requests, or requests for sensitive tactics, you will be asked to complete the BID Capability Form. Please refer to the Tasking Procedural Guidance about this process.

For urgent, out-of-hours enquires, call 01278 647 299 and the number will divert to the on-call SWROCU officer.
